Like all objects and furniture in your home, your headboard must be cleaned regularly. We explain how to do it in this article, depending on the model of headboard you have.
Why clean your headboard?
It is important to clean your headboard regularly for several reasons:
- Hygiene : You spend several hours each night with your head nestled next to your headboard. It is therefore essential that it is clean;
- Comfort : A headboard that is not maintained regularly can promote the appearance of bad odors. Cleaning your headboard allows you to keep it fresh;
- Aesthetics : If you don't clean your headboard regularly, dust will accumulate. In the best case scenario, the color will end up fading, which is a shame. In the worst case, the accumulated dust will become embedded and cause irreversible and unsightly stains;
- Durability : If you do not wash your headboard regularly, accumulated dust and stains can cause premature aging and may damage your headboard irreversibly.
As you will have understood, maintaining your headboard is not an option , but a necessity.
However, the advice to follow to properly clean your headboard depends on the model you have.
We tell you everything.
How to clean a wooden headboard
The first step to cleaning your wooden headboard is to remove the dust. To do this, use a duster or feather duster.
Then, the maintenance method depends mainly on the type of wood: lacquered, waxed or painted. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to avoid making mistakes.
Generally, you can easily find maintenance products in stores that are suitable for the type of wood you have.
Do not neglect the polishing step with a wooden headboard. This will allow you to preserve its shine as much as possible over time.
How to clean a fabric headboard
Again, the first step is to dust the fabric. To do this, simply use the soft brush of your vacuum cleaner. Pass the brush over the entire surface, as delicately as possible so as not to weaken the fabric.
Then, there are two options for cleaning the fabric of your headboard :
- If your headboard has a removable cover , simply remove the cover carefully and follow the washing instructions provided by the manufacturer;
- If your headboard is upholstered and the fabric cannot be removed from the frame, wipe (without rubbing) the entire surface of the fabric with a clean, damp cloth to avoid streaks. If necessary, you can use warm water and a mild detergent.
If a stain occurs, act quickly so that it does not set in. Take a clean cloth that you lightly soak in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and dab the stain without rubbing.
Please note, never use bleach or whitening products, as this may irreversibly damage the fabric.
For drying, in the case of a removable fabric, it is generally preferable to air dry (without direct contact with sunlight) and to avoid the dryer. Similarly, make sure that the cover is completely dry before replacing it on the structure.

You can also, according to the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations, finish with a polishing step and possibly treat the metal to maintain its shine over time.
