Many headboard models let you avoid drilling into your wall to attach them. This has 3 major benefits:

You protect your wall. To attach your headboard permanently to your bedroom wall, you can drill into the wall and mount the headboard on it using a wooden cleat and a dedicated mounting system, for example. The drawback of this technique is that you have to drill into your wall to install the mounting system that the headboard will rest on. By choosing another method, you keep your wall intact.

You get more flexibility. If you don't attach your headboard permanently to the wall, you keep the option of rearranging the furniture in your bedroom, and in particular of easily moving the bed and headboard.

You install your headboard more easily. If you opt for a mounting system that doesn't require drilling into your wall, installing your headboard is generally much easier and quicker.

Stand the headboard on the floor, against the wall

This is the simplest way to secure a headboard. Depending on the model you have chosen, you can also stand it directly on the floor and secure it by wedging it snugly between the box spring and mattress and the wall of your bedroom. This works in particular if you have a freestanding headboard or one with non-slip feet.

In practice, the weight of your bed should normally be enough to hold the headboard in place and keep it stable.

Attach the headboard to the bed base

If you don't want to make holes in your wall, one option is to attach your headboard directly to your bed base. This is possible if your headboard is tall enough to rise above the height of the bed base plus mattress.

Generally, when a headboard model can be attached directly to the bed base, the manufacturer supplies all the parts needed to install it. There are several possible techniques. For example: threaded rods, washers and lock nuts. In that case, you simply place the threaded rods at the designated spot on your bed base and slide them into the bracket attached to the headboard.

Use adhesive strips

This technique is somewhat less common and less reliable, but you can also attach your headboard with adhesive strips (such as dedicated Velcro strips).

This method only works under certain conditions: your headboard must be relatively light, the wall where you want to apply the adhesive strips must be perfectly flat and clean, and so on. Above all, make sure beforehand that this technique is truly suited to your headboard model.
